The End of Men Cheating on Their Wives?

12/7/2012

In the movie "My Fair Lady" the late British actor Stanley Holloway sings the song about taking the easy way out, "With a Little Bit of Luck," in his signature Cockney accent.

One of the most memorable lines from the song can be heard in the above video at 4:39 minutes where he sings:

Oh, it's a crime for man to go philandering.
And fill his wife's poor heart with grief and doubt.
Oh, it's a crime for man to go philandering - but
With a little bit of luck, with a little bit of luck,
You can see the bloodhound don't find out!

Throughout the ages many men, to the dismay of their wives, have furtively escaped the domestic realm seeking the thrill of "the other woman" and hoping for that "little bit of luck." Neither the threats of social humiliation, financial ruin, or the fires of hell have prevented the likes of David Petraeus, Tiger Woods, John Edwards, Bill Clinton and countless other less famous characters from heeding the call of testosterone. Exasperated women over the centuries have wondered whether something can actually be done about these Lotharios. Well ladies, your wait may soon be over. Science may have the answer to your quandary!

In recent study published on the Journal of Neuroscience the researchers examined the effect of the hormone oxytocin in modulating social distance between men and women. This hormone along with other related substances has been found to participate in the regulation of the pair bond between males and females in several monogamous species of mammals. In their study the investigators took 2 groups of men, single and married, and tested the effects of an intranasal spray of oxytocin on how close they would stand to an attractive woman. They found that married men when sprayed with the hormone would stand further away from the woman, whereas the hormone had no effect on single men. The researchers also found that married men sprayed with the hormone approached pictures of attractive women more slowly.

Of course this research is in its early stages, but it is possible that in the future several lines of sprays enhanced with the right hormones may be available to wives so they can prevent their would-be Casanova husbands from running away after the nearest skirt. What do you say ladies? If this product existed and your better half displayed a tendency to fancy himself Don Juan, would you spray him? Leave a comment and let us know!

Wow! That's a good/hard question.
If wives spray themselves with oxytocin, that will make their men bond closer with them. But if many wives spray themselves with oxytocin, won't that just confuse everyone?
So say the wrinkles are ironed out of the delivery system and a man is well bonded to his wife, won't there also be a need for the same strength of bond for the woman?
Say that's true... both partners are steel welded to each other.
What happens when one of them dies? Does the surviving partner then wither away and die of grief?
Or will there be a hormone for that too?
This is an interesting question, Rolando. And no doubt there will be something like this hormone available to us someday. If humankind can do something, we've demonstrated countless times that regardless of the consequences, we will do it.
Only after we've done it can the question be properly answered.
I only hope there are no unforeseen side effects of the drug.
ie Zombification. : )

Thanks for your comment Louise, but it's the husbands who get sprayed. The hormone has to reach the brain, that is why the researchers used a nasal spray in the study. But your broader question is interesting. Do we really want to chemically modify the behavior of our spouses to suit our needs? And what about the opposite situation? Suppose a husband thinks his wife is not being "sexy" enough. Would he slip "vixen pills" into her coffee in the morning if such pills were to be invented?

Some individuals with pathological behaviors, who find it hard to control themselves, would probably welcome these technologies. But I doubt regular people would appreciate them, especially if they are used on them without their consent.

This is the most misogynistic article I've read in years. It looks like an ad right out of a 50s Ladies Home Journal!!! "Ladies, make sure your husband's not out foolin' around while you're home cooking on your new Kenmore!"

Please. Does it work to keep women from cheating too? Hello, McFly! Women cheat too!!

This article makes women look like helpless damsels in distress, desperate to keep their husbands faithful while they keep the home fires burnin'.

Why not try communication or hey, maybe putting out a little once in awhile wouldn't hurt you! Or another thought, it's 2012. He has a smartphone. Look in it.

But let's not go back to the 1950s. That ship has sailed.

PS: I wanted to make it clear that my comment isn't an attack on the author or the article in any way. It's an attack on the IDEA and he was simply the messenger.

Thanks for your comment Nancy. Unfortunately this study only looked at men and how their social distance to attractive women was modified by oxytocin. The study results were remarkable in that only married men experienced the effect. Activities such as sex or even the proximity or touch of a spouse can trigger oxytocin release. It is also known that testosterone levels in men are lowered by interaction with their children. There is a wealth of data suggesting that a man who stays closer to his family environment is less likely to cheat on his wife. Likewise those that have to spend a greater amount of time away from their families are more prone to cheating. These hormonal changes may be at the root of the biological processes behind these effects.

Although I tried to make my post funny, there are certain individuals who have trouble controlling their actions who may benefit from hormonal treatments to curb their inclinations towards womanizing or even sex addiction. A very extreme case is when sex offenders undergo the controversial process of chemical castration. I am sure that there are female individuals who also have proclivities towards cheating on their spouses, but so far the research has centered on men.

Researching the biological underpinnings of our actions or abilities is always controversial as there is the potential for misuse of the data by people who wish to discriminate against certain groups. Because of this, this type of research or even how it is presented often stirs a lot of passion in the different people involved in the arguments, to the point that it can become nearly impossible to say or write anything without offending someone.

What's the addiction factor?

It's a combination of things. Thrill and adventure stimulates the pleasure centers in the brain (not to mention sex). Anything that does that can generate addiction.

Men that are more in contact with their children and wives have lower levels of testosterone than those who spend time away from them.
