Every writer, without exception, is a masochist, a sadist, a peeping Tom, an exhibitionist, a narcissist, an "injustice collector", and a depressed person constantly haunted by fears of unproductivity.

 
 
 Everywhere I go, I'm asked if I think the universities stifle writers. My opinion is that they don't stifle enough of them. There's many a best seller that could have been prevented by a good teacher.

 
 
Many people hear voices when no one is there. Some of them are called mad and are shut up in rooms where they stare at the walls all day. Others are called writers and they do pretty much the same thing.
